Can we use AI to make BattleMaps?

Entertainment

Introduction

Lately, I've been exploring the capabilities of MidJourney, an AI-based image generation tool, to create images for my tabletop role-playing campaign. As I prepare to start a steampunk campaign next week, I've leveraged MidJourney for both character and location designs. One surprising use case I’ve discovered is its ability to produce maps, particularly when I specify a "pencil sketch village map on papyrus."

The Quest for Maps

When prompted correctly, MidJourney can create stunning medieval fantasy pencil sketch maps. Although the resultant words in the maps may appear as gibberish and the small details could sometimes seem out of place, I found these maps to be compelling. The images can also be generated in color, showcasing their versatility.

To refine the maps, I use an open-source image editor to eliminate unwanted text and markings. My method involves applying the blur tool to blend these elements seamlessly into the background, though I'm aware there might be more efficient techniques available. If anyone has a quicker method, I welcome their suggestions!

The Value of AI-Generated Maps

These AI-generated maps prove invaluable when I find myself in a creative pinch or need to produce a large volume of maps without extensive time investment in traditional tools like Incarnate. This led me to wonder whether MidJourney could also create battle maps. The answer is an enthusiastic "yes!" My experiment with prompts including "Dungeons and Dragons battle map" yielded interesting results, albeit with some random gems among them.

By adding detailed descriptors like "Cathedral basement" or "underground cave," MidJourney effectively tailors the maps to match your specifications. Many of these maps, despite their curious names (like "diakir's dagmonds" or "Dal dwarfs dangles"), are surprisingly polished and usable, some even ready for platforms like Roll20.

In conclusion, MidJourney is a fantastic tool for quick map design or inspiration when you may not be keen on creating maps from scratch. And let’s face it: if we treat these AI tools well, perhaps they'll keep us in their good graces for a while longer!

I invite you to join my Discord server, where less than 50 of us gather to discuss all things nerdy. Occasionally, someone will run a one-shot game, but even when that's not happening, it's a great space for engaging discussions.
