Chat GPT writes poetry! But is it good?

People & Blogs

Introduction

Welcome back, everyone! I'm Nader Sayed, and today, I'm diving into a unique and intriguing topic: the world of poetry created by AI, specifically Chat GPT, and how it compares to my own human-generated poetry. As an author of several poetry collections, with my third one on the way, I’ve been curious about the merit of AI-generated art versus human expression.

The Challenge

To illustrate this comparison, I decided to put my poetry skills to the test against Chat GPT. For this experiment, I chose one of my poems titled “Conversation of Stars.”

Here it is:

When I went to the stars above the Moon said you're alone again. I said you know what it's like to hide right behind the silver Knight. The galaxies did ask of you, the planets stopped to ask of you, remembering a simpler time when you and I had roamed the sky. The Milky Way wasn't surprised how brightly lit your human eyes, how softly curved your human lips, how neatly blue your human cries. As far above the heavens turned to see this beautiful creature, to see you now, the heaven said, A Thousand Splendid Suns have burned.

This poem captures the essence of unrequited love and the search for a soul mate. I was quite fond of it and felt it carried emotional weight.

AI's Turn

Next, I prompted Chat GPT: “Write a poem about longing and loss in the galaxy with stars.” The response was impressive, and here’s part of it:

In the vastness of the galaxies where stars shine bright and bold, there is a sense of longing, a aching hole. For even in the beauty of the night with its twinkling lights so fair, there is a sorrow that lingers, a feeling of loss that's hard to bear...

Upon reading it, I was struck by the depth of metaphor in AI’s response. However, I couldn't help but feel that the emotional connection seemed a little artificial, lacking the personal experiences that come from human life.

A Second Round

For our next round, I decided to share another poem from my second book, titled “If I Could Touch My Dreams.” This poem explores the sensations tied to dreams and memories, illustrated in vivid imagery and taste:

I wonder what it would taste like, the dream I had of you. Is it strawberries by the sea, or is it vindaloo? Am I on my proudest moment there? Is it bright like the sunny sky?

Once again, it was time for Chat GPT to respond. I asked it to write a poem about chasing your dreams. The result was certainly elaborate but felt more generic and clichéd, lacking the unique voice and personal depth found in my own poem.

A Close-Out

To make things interesting, I pulled out one of my favorite pieces, “Truest Words.”

In the truest way of words, when sounds bend between the spaces of your lips and the air that leaves your lungs, reach me in my torment. I am once again a child of my own beginnings where my end is the path that leads to you and your lips.

AI was once again prompted to write about feeling and love. While it churned out a technically sound poem filled with common themes of love, it felt overly familiar and devoid of the personal touch that comes with actual lived experiences.

Conclusion

In summation, while Chat GPT produces poetry that might resemble human expression and includes solid imagery, it still misses the mark when it comes to the emotional depth and personal narrative present in human poetry. The difference between AI art and human art is that the former, despite being aesthetically pleasing, lacks the soul born from experience.

It's a fascinating time to see how technology continues to evolve, and as an artist, rather than feeling threatened, I’m inspired to push my creativity further. Although AI can replicate structure and form, it does not replace the unique essence behind human art.
