ChatGPT Plus vs. Gemini Advanced: Comparing AI Answers From Both

Science & Technology

Introduction

In the rapidly evolving landscape of AI chatbots, two heavyweights have emerged: OpenAI's ChatGPT Plus and Google's Gemini Advanced. Both offer impressive capabilities, but they come with their own sets of strengths and weaknesses. In this article, we will compare these two AI models by testing them in real-world scenarios, such as recipe modification, travel planning, and email writing. By examining their responses, we can gauge which AI provides more useful and accurate answers.

Subscription and Features

Both ChatGPT Plus and Gemini Advanced are available at a subscription price of $ 20 per month.

  • ChatGPT Plus gives access to ChatGPT-4, advanced AI image generation, higher usage limits, and early access to new features. Notably, it has a context window of 8,192 tokens.
  • Gemini Advanced also features a 1.5 Pro chatbot, image FX, documented image uploads for analysis, code editing, and includes 2 terabytes of Google One storage. It stands out with a much larger context window of up to 1 million tokens.

Test Scenario: Recipe Creation

To understand how each AI handles creative requests, we asked both to come up with a churro recipe that incorporates Thai flavors and pumpkin spice.

  • ChatGPT Plus produced a standard churro recipe but suggested a "Thai coconut dipping sauce" as the integration of Thai flavors. While the suggestion was creative, it did not merge the Thai elements directly into the churro itself.
  • Gemini Advanced proposed a churro recipe that included pumpkin puree, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg, recommending a Thai-inspired coating instead.

Both models provided unique interpretations, showcasing their strengths in creativity and varying culinary integrations.

Test Scenario: Product Recommendations

Next, we prompted each chatbot to recommend a mid-range turntable available in red, without a phono preamp.

  • ChatGPT Plus suggested several models, including the Project Debut Carbon Evo (which does come in red) but mistakenly included the Rega Plan R1, which does not come in red.
  • Gemini Advanced correctly identified the Project Debut Carbon Evo and noted that the Rega Plan R1 doesn't come in red. It also suggested the Fluance RT82, which is not available in red either.

Here, ChatGPT provided more potential options, but Gemini Advanced offered clearer accuracy by specifying color availability.

Test Scenario: Travel Recommendations

To further evaluate the AIs, we requested travel itineraries for the small town of Festus, Missouri.

  • ChatGPT Plus provided a reasonable itinerary that included local restaurants and parks, although some suggestions were unusual.
  • Gemini Advanced recommended traveling to nearby St. Louis for certain attractions and dining options, indicating a willingness to extend beyond the small town.

Both models showed competence in generating travel itineraries, albeit with differences in focus.

Test Scenario: Email Writing

For practical applications, we tasked each model with writing a professional yet festive email requesting a day off for a religious holiday.

  • ChatGPT Plus crafted an email that was light-hearted, included emojis, and had an enthusiastic tone.
  • Gemini Advanced opened with an "Eid Mubarak" greeting and recommended bringing treats to share with coworkers, maintaining a respectful tone but lacking the playful elements of ChatGPT.

Both emails appropriately addressed the prompt, highlighting the varying tones each model can adopt.

Test Scenario: Article Summarization

Finally, we provided both AIs with a lengthy review of a video game, asking them to summarize it.

ChatGPT Plus summarized the article effectively, capturing the essence but borrowing heavily from the original language. It presented an overall understanding of the reviewer’s mixed feelings.

Gemini Advanced also produced a good summary, yet like ChatGPT, it needed to frame some opinions more accurately to distinguish between general praise and the author's perspective.

Conclusion

This comparative review of ChatGPT Plus and Gemini Advanced reveals the nuanced strengths and weaknesses of both AI models. While testing resulted in varying degrees of accuracy and creativity across different scenarios, it appeared that ChatGPT generally yielded more comprehensive and verbose responses, while Gemini Advanced proved to present correction details and a more reliable output regarding specific product characteristics. With both models making occasional mistakes, the choice ultimately depends on user preference for verbosity versus accuracy.
