Creating My First AI-Generated Deep Fake (With Movio.ai)

People & Blogs

Introduction

Hello everyone! This is Daniel Rosell, and I'm excited to share today's video with you from my home office in Jerusalem. I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve just crossed the 800 subscriber mark on YouTube—only 200 more to go until I hit 1,000! It’s hard to believe I’ve come this far, considering how varied the content has been. I’ve been having a lot of fun learning about video production and interviewing fascinating people.

Today, I want to discuss an interesting mention I received on Twitter from my good friend, Peter Duffy, back in Ireland. Peter runs a fantastic monthly tech newsletter called "How Curious" that summarizes the latest in technology and podcasts. He knows my interest in artificial intelligence and deep fakes, which I first encountered when I published a book under a pseudonym.

The technology around deep fakes is rapidly evolving, and I think it’s vital for all of us to have conversations about its implications. For this video, I’ll show you a new tool called Movio.ai, which allows users to create deep fake videos using AI technology. Although the synthesized voices still sound a bit robotic, the blending of AI-generated faces with realistic backgrounds is fascinating.

Exploring Movio.ai

One of the first things I did was visit the website Movio.ai, where you can create videos from scratch or use existing templates. Another interesting project I’ve followed is a site called "This Person Does Not Exist," which leverages Nvidia's Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) to create ultra-realistic fake faces.

In my demonstration, I focused on generating a fake avatar, whom I decided to name "Dave." I ensured to select a neutral facial expression to achieve better results. After selecting Dave, I went through the process of refining his image and preparing it for video production.

I loaded up Movio.ai and chose a landscape format for my video. After uploading a scenic background of the Western Wall in Jerusalem, I added my fake avatar, Dave, to see how he looked against a real backdrop. I recorded a simple script for Dave which said, “Hi, this is Dave. I’m not a real person; instead, I’m an artificially generated face.”

This whole process aimed to test the believability of the deep fake creation. As I worked on the rendering of Dave's video, I acknowledged the potential dangers of deep fake technology. With rapid advancements, this tech could easily be misused by malicious actors to create fake videos of public figures or even ordinary individuals.

While my first video was rendering, I also created a second one using a different fake avatar I dubbed "Dave 2." This time, I added a corporate background to see how well it would translate against a different setting.

The Final Result

Once I had rendered both videos, I was excited to share the results. The technology may not be perfect—or entirely believable just yet—but this is the front line of what tools are capable of today.

I raised concerns about the implications that come with such powerful technologies, especially in terms of disinformation and manipulation. While the advancements could benefit legitimate content creators who need avatars for their businesses, they could equally pose significant risks.

Thank you for joining me on this journey into AI and deep fakes! If you’re interested in this technology and want to explore it further, don’t forget to subscribe to my channel for more updates.

FAQ

Q: What is Movio.ai?
A: Movio.ai is a platform that allows users to create deep fake videos using AI-generated avatars and backgrounds.

Q: How does the deep fake technology work?
A: Deep fake technology combines AI algorithms to create synthesized voices and faces, which can then be used for video production.

Q: Is the voice generation quality good in deep fakes?
A: While the synthesized voices are improving, they still often sound slightly robotic and may not be entirely realistic yet.

Q: What are the potential risks of using deep fake technology?
A: The risks include the potential for creating deceptive content that could misinform the public or be used maliciously against individuals or public figures.

Q: Can I create a deep fake using only templates?
A: Yes, Movio.ai offers both pre-made templates and options to create deep fakes from scratch using user-uploaded content.

Q: Why should I be concerned about deep fakes?
A: Rapid advancements in this technology may lead to exploitation by actors seeking to spread misinformation or manipulate public perception.
