Howto & Style
Introduction
Creating a duplicate key at home is easier than you might think! With just a few simple materials, you can make a functional copy of your key without the need to purchase a new one. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it.
Materials Needed
- Clay (available in the market for ₹10)
- An empty matchbox
- The original key you want to duplicate
- Baking soda
- Super glue
- A knife
- A scale
Steps to Duplicate Your Key
Prepare the Clay: Start by taking a piece of clay and fitting it into an empty matchbox. Press the clay firmly using your hands to ensure it is completely flat and uniform.
Imprint the Key: Take the key you want to duplicate and place it onto the clay. Press down on the key firmly to make an imprint. Make sure that both holes of the key are covered with clay to capture the full shape of the key.
Extract the Key: Using a scale, ensure that the key imprint is complete. Then, carefully lift the key away from the clay. It’s crucial to do this gently to avoid distorting the shape of the key. If done correctly, you should see a perfect mold of your key.
Fill with Baking Soda: Take some baking soda and fill the entire imprint of the key in the clay mold to the top. This will serve as the foundation for your new key.
Apply Super Glue: Spread a thin layer of super glue over the baking soda. After that, add a bit more baking soda on top of the glue and flatten it out using the scale.
Final Super Glue Layer: Once it’s flat, apply another layer of super glue on top. Allow the glue to dry completely.
Remove the Mold: Gently take the clay out of the matchbox and carefully extract the key shape from the mold.
Clean the Key Shape: Use the knife to clean any excess dust or uneven edges from the sides of your new key.
Test Your Key: Once you have cleaned the shape, try it on your lock! If everything went well, you should have a working duplicate key.
Now you have a duplicate key made right at home without the need for expensive services!
