Easy ways to remove watermark - Photoshop Tutorial

Howto & Style

Introduction

Removing watermarks from images can be a tricky task, but with Adobe Photoshop, it can be achieved with relative ease. This tutorial will guide you through the step-by-step process of removing watermarks from any image using the tools available in Photoshop.

Step 1: Create a Duplicate Layer

First, open your image in Adobe Photoshop. To avoid damaging the original photo, make a copy of it by pressing Control + J. Rename this layer to "Remove Watermark" for future reference.

Step 2: Select the Watermark Color

Next, navigate to the top menu and click on Select, then choose Color Range. In the color range dialog, ensure that “Sampled Colors” is selected, and make sure that “Invert” is unchecked. Click on the first eye dropper tool and then click on the color of the watermark in your image.

Zoom in to get a clearer view for selection. If the selection seems too sharp or limited, adjust the "Fuzziness" slider to around 34 to include more shades and areas of the watermark.

Step 3: Refine Your Selection

Since the initial selection can be very tight and close to the edges, we will refine it further. Go back to Select and choose Select and Mask. In this panel, set the following parameters:

  • Radius: 60 pixels
  • Feather: 2 pixels
  • Contrast: 70%
  • Shift Edge: 30%

After adjusting these settings, select "Output To" and choose Selection.

Step 4: Expand the Selection

To avoid missing any edges, navigate back to Select, select Modify, and then choose Expand. In the dialog box, expand the selection by 1 pixel. (Note that this value might depend on your image size.)

Step 5: Fill the Selection

With the updated selection, go to the top menu and click on Edit, then select Fill. In the fill window, open the “Contents” list and choose Content-Aware. This will help Photoshop fill the selected area with surrounding pixels, effectively removing the watermark.

Finally, press Control + D to deselect the active selection. You should see that the selected area has been filled nicely, and the watermark is removed, leaving your image looking clean.
