Getting Started with Luma AI: Guided Capture Mode

Science & Technology

Introduction

Welcome to the Luma AI beta! In this article, we'll walk you through the process of creating your first Luma capture using the guided capture mode. This mode is designed to help you easily capture medium-sized objects in a user-friendly way.

Preparation for Capture

To begin your capture, ensure that you are in a well-lit environment that allows you to freely move around the object without casting shadows onto it.

Step-by-Step Capture Process

  1. Check Camera Lenses: Always start by making sure that your camera lenses are clean and smudge-free to ensure the best quality capture.

  2. Open the Luma App: Launch the Luma application on your device, and tap the plus button to initiate a guided capture.

  3. Define the Object: Point the crosshairs at the center of the object you wish to capture and confirm your selection with a tap.

  4. Move Around the Object: Rotate about 90 degrees around the object and tap again to confirm.

  5. Adjust the Capture Box: If the initial box created for capturing is not accurate, don't worry! You have the capability to tweak it:

    • Use the dial along the bottom edge to control the rotation.
    • Use the dial along the right edge to adjust the height above the ground.
    • Increase or decrease the size of the box using the blue arrows until it roughly encloses the entire object.
  6. Final Adjustments and Confirmation: Move around the object once more, making any necessary adjustments to the box, and then tap confirm.

Capturing the Data

Once you've defined the object, you are ready to capture it. You will see a series of loops projected around the object that will guide you:

  • The aiming reticle, along with lines pointing inwards from the loops, helps you position your camera inward toward the center of the scene as you slowly move around.

  • If the theoretical turns orange, this indicates that you may be moving too quickly or not directing your camera in the right direction. Adjust your speed and positioning until it turns blue again.

  • As you successfully capture a loop, it will fade away, allowing you to progress to the next layer of the scan until all loops are completed.

Finalizing Your Capture

If you are unable to achieve 100% coverage for any reason, you can still press the Finish button located in the top right-hand corner as long as you have collected enough data to generate a scene. For optimal results, aim to capture data from all required angles toward the center of your object.

Once all captures are complete, upload the data, and let Luma do the rest!

We look forward to seeing what you create with Luma!

FAQ

Q: What should I do if my camera lenses are dirty?
A: Always clean your camera lenses before starting to ensure clear captures.

Q: Can I capture small objects using Luma AI?
A: The guided capture mode is optimized for medium-sized objects, so it's recommended to start with that size.

Q: What if I can't achieve 100% coverage when capturing?
A: You can still hit the Finish button if you have collected enough data; however, for the best results, aim for maximum coverage.

Q: How does Luma determine the optimal positions for capturing data?
A: Luma uses projected loops and an aiming reticle to guide you in the best positions toward the center of the scene.

Q: What happens after I finish capturing data?
A: After capturing, you simply need to upload the data, and Luma will process it for you.
