Modyfi Tutorial - Modifier Basics

Introduction

Welcome to this modified tutorial on the basics of modifiers! Modifiers serve as filters and effects in our design toolkit. They operate similarly to adjustment layers, but the most exciting aspect is that they are completely non-destructive and adjustable in real-time.

Selecting an Image

To get started, let's choose a visually appealing image from the stock image browser to use as a base for our project. I’ve found a great one that is simple yet effective. Selecting the image and adding it to the canvas is straightforward.

Adding Pen Strokes

Next, let's enhance our canvas by adding a few pen strokes. It's important to note that I can modify the appearance of any stroke before or after creating the vector path. For this example, I’ll change the color and hardness of one stroke and use it as a template for future strokes. The blue tones I selected match beautifully.

Once I’m satisfied, I'll duplicate this stroke and adjust some of the vector paths to arrange them better around the image.

(Note: This part of the process can be sped up for efficiency.)

Adding Modifiers

Now it’s time to introduce our first modifier. Using the command bar, I can quickly identify the type of effect I want. In this case, we’ll be adding a repeater to the project. The canvas automatically updates as soon as we add the repeater, allowing me to adjust its properties in real-time.

Using the on-canvas gizmo, I can control the rotation of the repeater and decide how I want it to blend with the layers below. To ensure that the entire image is influenced by the repeater, I’ll move this modifier to the top of the layer tree. The repositioning of the modifier visibly impacts the canvas.

I’ll make a few more tweaks to the modifier properties to refine the look before moving on to our next modifier.

Brightness and Contrast Adjustment

To brighten the image slightly, I’ll add a brightness contrast modifier from the command bar. As before, I’ll place this at the top of the layer tree so it influences everything beneath it.

The image is already looking good, but let's continue by incorporating some more creative modifiers.

Adding a Halftone Modifier

Next, I’ll add a halftone Luma modifier to add a bit more character to the design. Experimenting with the various settings, I can see how different parameters affect the overall appearance of the project.

Similar to the repeater, the halftone Luma's effect on the canvas depends largely on its position in the layer tree. It’s incredibly dynamic to adjust the properties of modifiers while observing real-time updates on the canvas.

After some exploration, I’ll choose a blend mode for the halftone Luma. The screen blend mode looks fantastic, and I’ll finalize it with a few final adjustments.

Edge Modifier for Impact

For our final modifier, I'm looking for something that adds more impact. I believe an edge modifier would do the trick. Upon application, I notice it alters the image considerably more than expected, which is good—but I want to maintain the overall lightness. I’ll test different blend modes to find an option that aligns with my vision. The difference blend mode works perfectly, helping achieve the desired look.

After this adjustment, I’ll make one last slight rotation tweak on the halftone Luma, and I’m very pleased with the outcome!

Non-Destructive Modifications

Remember when I mentioned that modifiers are non-destructive and affect the canvas in real-time? This is a game-changer. I can modify any layer and have the entire stack update instantly.

For instance, watch as I rearrange some elements. I can even replace the base image with another stock picture, and the canvas will adjust accordingly.

Let’s find another image and make the swap. I’ve come across one that I think will look great. After positioning it, I can hide the original image to see how the new one alters the overall design.

Conclusion

FAQ

What are modifiers in design applications?
Modifiers are filters and effects that allow for adjustments to be made non-destructively in real-time.

How do I add a modifier to my project?
You can add a modifier by using the command bar to search for the desired effect, which will automatically update the canvas.

What is the benefit of using modifiers?
Modifiers allow for real-time adjustments without permanently altering the original image, making it easier to experiment with different effects.

Can I change the order of modifiers once they are applied?
Yes, the location of a modifier in the layer tree significantly influences its effect on the project, and you can move them at any time.

Is it possible to swap out images while keeping the same modifiers?
Absolutely! Modifiers are non-destructive, which means you can replace images and the modifiers will still apply in real-time.
