Introduction
Hey N Fam! Today, I have an important message to share as we commemorate five wonderful years of our YouTube journey this December. We are incredibly grateful for each and every one of our subscribers; you have truly made our lives even richer. As we reflect on these past five years, we’re announcing some significant changes to our channel. This includes a shift away from family vlogging, and we want to share our reasons and what’s next for Not Enough Nelson.
How It All Began
When we first started on YouTube, it was for three main reasons:
Capturing Memories: With 15 kids, life was moving so fast, and I realized I wasn’t capturing those adorable moments as often as I would like.
Inspiration from Friends: We met another YouTube family that made content creation look fun, and Cody worked for them for a time. They continue to be our dear friends and inspired us to dive into this world.
A Voice for Adoption: During my morning walks, I reflected on my desire to write a book about adoption and the miracles in our lives. The idea of using YouTube as a platform became clear—a microphone to share our story.
After sharing this idea with my kids, they were thrilled! They were eager and excited to start a family channel, promising to keep our personal matters private. We set boundaries on what we would share, aiming to showcase the fun and beautiful chaos of our big family without diving into deeper emotional topics.
The Journey Thus Far
Initially, we focused on lighthearted, entertaining content. Who could forget our first video, where the kids showcased their personalities? We ventured into fun challenges and partnerships, which our audience appreciated. However, over time, as our channel grew, so did the questions about what it's really like to have such a large family.
While I was enthusiastic to share our experiences surrounding adoption and family life, I came to realize that my kids' stories are theirs to share, not just mine. Looking back, I recognize now that some of the personal topics we addressed on the channel might not have been what’s best for them in the long run.
Reevaluating Our Approach
A few months ago, I had a heart-to-heart conversation with one of my teenagers regarding their decisions, during which a milestone realization struck me. The lens of the camera should not define how we experience life. I want to prioritize meaningful family experiences over creating content.
As we discussed our plans, it became apparent that we need to prioritize privacy. After many candid discussions with the kids, we decided to adopt a new approach towards content creation. Some of the concrete changes we’re implementing include:
Limiting Real-Life Serious Moments: We want to shy away from filming videos that explore bullying, personal struggles, and emotional public discussions.
No Emergency Room Videos: Experiences involving medical emergencies can be traumatic and invasive to our privacy.
Restricting Holiday Filming: While these moments can be fun to share, we’ve found that filming them can often overshadow the joy of simply being together as a family.
Thus, we’ll be returning to a simpler, more enjoyable style of content creation moving forward.
What’s Next?
Our new content strategy will include:
One Video Per Week on Not Enough Nelson: This will allow us to focus on enjoyable content while making every episode a celebration of our family spirit and creativity.
Flexible Schedule for N Fam: Content will be created based on our desires—when we feel inspired and excited about a project, we’ll share it.
Lastly, we’ll focus on specific content types that everyone enjoys without compromising our family’s private nature. You may see new videos on challenges, silly family games, and fun collaborations while keeping our deeper stories off the screen for now.
Conclusion
We’re excited for this new chapter and genuinely appreciate your ongoing support. We believe these changes will allow us to enjoy our family experiences more fully and authentically. Here's to new memories and cherished family moments ahead!
